A Time to Kill is a crime drama based on John Grisham’s novel of the same name and starring Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Spacey. Set in the South, this 1996 film is about racism and revenge killing. A 10-year-old black girl is raped by two white racists, who, although arrested, appear may be acquitted due to community’s deep-seated racism. When the girl’s father kills the rapists and goes on trial for murder himself he is defended by a young, local white attorney, with the help of a liberal law student from Massachusetts. The movie was both a critical and commercial success, earning over $100 million at the box office. Samuel L. Jackson, in his role as the raped girl’s father, was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor. Sandra Bullock, in her role as the liberal law student won the Blockbuster Entertainment Award - Favorite Actress –Suspense.
