The harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), is a true seal, or earless seal, of the family Phocidae. True seals are more specialized for aquatic life than their eared cousins, the fur seals and sea lions of the family Otariidae. Harbor seals are found in the Northern Hemisphere along Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic marine coastlines. The harbor seal is the most widely distributed species of pinniped and for that reason are often referred to as the “common seal”.
