The leopard (Panthera pardus) is the most widely distributed of all the big cats. The leopard can be found in the wild in sub-Saharan Africa and across Asia, as far north as Siberia. Although most leopards are spotted, the melanistic color variety is not uncommon in leopards. These black leopards are often referred to as black panthers.
